The light is too harsh. With a cloudy weather you would get a better result, I guess. The subject is interesting, worth exploring it further.

@Ted: It's a New Zealand Kauri tree and it grows in my own back yard! it's proper name is agathis australis which is weird considering it doesn't grow in Australia. If you click on my portfolio link there are other pictures of it. I kind of obsess over it a little.

Just see that you already explained what we can see here. This resin (kauri copal) is one of the reasons why this tree species has been lumbered. I understand why this tree made you buy your house, it's very impressive! Agathis is a very interesting and old conifer, I'm very impressed!
