Camellia

I played around with black and white in Photoshop (stumble stumble) which I really don't know much about. Critiques welcome!

I'm a beginner at this photography thing. Any hints, tips, constructive criticism or comments are welcome and appreciated.

I would prefer the camellia less exposed, with more span of mid-tones to enhance details.

Yes, something in what AP says . . one of the real strengths of b&w is that the removal of color can somehow release detail that we would otherwise miss. It does not happen here . . although I have a feeling that, if it was in full color, no-one would be mentioning detail at all !

@Ronnie 2¢: True! My first attempt at conversion the flower was really blown out...hardly any details. I have a lot to learn about this process (as well as lots of other things!). Maybe I'll post the colour version one day. : )

A good image Margie. There are different levels of B&W, such as - high key contrasts, or balanced mid gray tones, and they all have their own characteristics too. It's how you feel the photo should look that matters.

The composition is very good but you've lost your details at the dark end - what version of Photoshop are you using?

@Stephen Phillips: Hi Stephen, thanks for the visit and comment. I'm using CS3... well "using" is a very loose term here! I converted to b/w and then just played with curves and various filters. I'd appreciate any other suggestions you have.

I love this flower. Keep using photoshop and you'll start perfecting your images. It takes alot of practice, just like photography, but it always starts with a great composition which you always manage to achieve.
