Te Wero

Posted by
Margie (Auckland, New Zealand) on 12 May 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

This Maori warrior in bronze entitled "te wero" (the challenge) is armed with his mere (club-like weapon) and has his pukupuku (battle cloak) wrapped around his arm to ward off opponents blows.

Rhys from Darlington, United Kingdom

I like the vignette, really helps draw you in.

@Rhys: Oops...I took this through the fence (as per the background) and that's the shadow of the bars which I thought I'd cropped out. Looks like I should have left them in!

Observing from Chester, United Kingdom

Hi Margie, very nice culture-type photo, and nicely framed. Re: Rhys comment on vignetting, technically it used to be a shortcoming of the lens, sometimes still is. I usually apply my vignettes to enhance the photo and think of it as part of the pp.

Ron from Saint Louis, United States

I love public sculptures ... in this one it appears as if he's caged, which adds to the drama of his warrior-like stance! You've captured, here, a wonderful intersection of art ... te wero and in the background a poster for La Boheme (one of my favorite operas!).

@Ron: Hi Ron, thanks for the comment, and well spotted. I did think about calling it Culture Clash.

@Amir: I think one of the great things about this site (apart from the photographic help) is the new things you learn about different places.
Thanks for your visit.
